Size guide
Which bike size do you need?
Bikes are sized by wheel diameter in inches. Use this chart as a starting point, then pop in and we'll check the fit in person.
| Wheel size | Typical age | Rider height | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12″ | 2 – 4 years | 85 – 100 cm | First pedal bike, usually with training wheels. |
| 16″ | 4 – 6 years | 100 – 120 cm | Most kids learn to ride without training wheels on this size. |
| 20″ | 6 – 9 years | 115 – 135 cm | Often the first bike with gears and hand brakes. |
| 24″ | 9 – 12 years | 135 – 150 cm | A bridge between kids' and adult bikes. |
| 26″ | Teens & adults | 145 cm and up | Classic adult wheel size for everyday riding. |
| 29″ | Adults | 165 cm and up | Large wheels that roll easily over rough ground. |
Height matters more than age, and sizes vary a little between brands. If your child is between two sizes, the smaller bike is usually easier to control while they learn.
How to check the fit
- Standing over the bike: the rider should stand flat-footed over the top tube with a little space to spare.
- Sitting on the saddle: young riders should reach the ground with the balls of their feet. For older riders, the leg should be almost straight at the bottom of the pedal stroke.
- Reaching the handlebars: arms should be slightly bent, without stretching or leaning far forward.
- Brakes: small hands should be able to squeeze the brake levers comfortably.
Kids' bikes or adult bikes?
12″ to 24″ wheels are made for children. From around 145 cm tall, most riders move to a 26″ bike, and taller adults often prefer 29″ wheels.
